Mr Pyakurel has involved himself in almost all major human rights and democratic movements in Nepal. He began his social career as a journalist in 1976. The same year he joined under-ground political activities launched by the Leftists. He is one of the founder members of Nepal National Teachers Association (NNTA), now a strong national teachers movement in Nepal. NNTA’s strong voice was one of the factors, instrumental to overthrow the partyless Panchayat regime(Partyless Panchyat system was King’s authoritarian tyranny). Mr. Pyakurel is also popularly known as one of the organisers of the teacher's movement in 1980. The movement generated an anti-Panchayat sentiment among the teachers and students nationwide.
Mr Pyakaurel is also a founder member of the first Nepali human rights organisation, the Forum for Protection of Human Rights (FOPHUR) founded in 1983. Forum for Democracy and National Unity (FODENU) was established in 1985 to unite all democratic forces to launch anti-Panchyat movement. Mr. Pyakurel was its founding General Secretary. The United Left Front (ULF), an alliance of seven leftist parties, was formed in 1989. Mr. Pyakurel was its central member. The ULF and Nepali Congress Party jointly led the People’s Movement of 1990 to topple the Panchyat System.
INSEC was established in 1988 by Mr. Pyakurel and Late Mr. Prakash Kafley. Mr. Kafley deid in a tragic plane crash in 1992. Mr. Kafley started his career as a journalist. He was founding member of Forum for Protection of Human Right (FOPHUR).
Currently Mr. Pyakurel serves as Executive Chairman of INSEC and an Executive Board Member of the Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA), a Bangkok-based organisation.
